How to Prevent Windows 10 from Downloading Automatically

In April 2015 Microsoft released an update under KB3035583 that, if installed on computers running Windows 7.1 SP1 (optional) and Windows 8.1 (recommended), will automatically download Windows 10.

A couple of things to note about this update:

  • A reboot is not required after the update is installed.
  • The update does NOT apply to Enterprise versions of Windows.
  • The upgrade files are saved on the root of the C: drive in a folder called “$Windows.~BT”

After Windows 10 is downloaded, a notification is displayed in the system tray that the computer is ready to be upgraded to Windows 10.

To prevent Windows 10 from being downloaded automatically, uninstall KB3035583. A reboot may be required.
