In April 2015 Microsoft released an update under KB3035583 that, if installed on computers running Windows 7.1 SP1 (optional) and Windows 8.1 (recommended), will automatically download Windows 10.
A couple of things to note about this update:
- A reboot is not required after the update is installed.
- The update does NOT apply to Enterprise versions of Windows.
- The upgrade files are saved on the root of the C: drive in a folder called “$Windows.~BT”
After Windows 10 is downloaded, a notification is displayed in the system tray that the computer is ready to be upgraded to Windows 10.
To prevent Windows 10 from being downloaded automatically, uninstall KB3035583. A reboot may be required.
